Google presented in the evening its pixel smartphones of the second generation. Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are more different from each other than in the first generation. The Pixel 2 XL comes with rounded display and much narrower edges. Expensive but are both smartphones: starting from 799 and 939 euros it starts.
Pixel 2 XL comes with thin edges and Active Edge
Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are not basically different smartphones, Google sets for this year however on more distinguishing features than the first pixel, which differed from the XL model only by display size, resolution and battery. Now comes the larger of the two models also with a separate design for the front. The six inch OLED display has rounded corners and narrow edges. In the smaller pixel 2 with 5-inch OLED screen, however, the display corners run sharply and the areas above and below the panel are significantly longer. Stereo speakers, however, fit on the front in both versions.
The housing is made of metal, the area around the camera made of glass. Both versions come with IP67 certification and Active Edge, a pressure-sensitive framework that can be used to start the Google Assistant.
The backs then look identical again. Google re-integrates the fingerprint sensor centrally on the back, but this time below the area for camera and antennas and not in it. The backs only adorns a small Google-G, logos on the front or hints on the finished HTC (pixel 2) and LG (pixel 2 XL) is not to be seen at first sight.
Same fast hardware in both versions
The installed hardware is also the same. Google relies on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 (Test), 4 GB LPDDR4X RAM, and 64 GB memory in the basic version on the system-on-a-chip. For a surcharge there is also a model with 128 GB of memory. The use of memory cards in microSD format is not possible as with previous Nexus devices and the first pixel generation.
New camera comes with OIS and Google Photos without memory limit
Google has once again placed great value on the camera of pixel 2. The first pixel offers one of the best smartphone cameras on the market. In pixel 2, for the first time, an optical image stabilizer (OIS), the lack of which was criticized a year ago. Google was able to compensate for this, however, with a very good electronic stabilization. In video mode, Google is now using a combination of OIS and EIS.
Google uses a 12.2 megapixel sensor, but now with so-called dual-pixel technology for fast autofocus by phase comparison. A laser autofocus supports the system at a short distance. Also Google’s always active Auto-HDR-Plus-Mode is back on board, which creates a photo with an enlarged dynamic range from several recordings in an extremely short time. As last year, Google has joined DxOMark before the introduction of the smartphone. With 98 points, Pixel 2 (XL) is again the smartphone with the best rating in the ranking. The result is composed of 99 points for photo and 96 points for video.
Although Google has only one camera installed, there is also a portrait mode for Pixel 2, which allows Google with the help of Machine Learning and only one lens. The camera should be able to recognize which areas of the recording are assigned to the foreground and the background. The background can then be blurred to produce a bokeh. Motion photos are also available at Google, comparable to live photos at Apple. In this mode also 1.5 seconds of video are recorded before and after the actual photo shoots.
For both Pixel 2 smartphones, there is again unlimited cloud storage in Google Photos, which saves in full original resolution, motion pictures and video recordings up to 4K.
Google Lens detects objects
This year, the new pixel smartphones will be a preview of Google Lens, which was shown for the first time in Google I / O 2017. As with Google Goggles, which is now no longer Google, the user holds the viewfinder on an object and then receives information on the targeted object.
For example, if Google Lens is targeted at a flower, the Google Assistant will show which genre it is. A step further is the detection of restaurants: Based on the location data of the user combined with the photo of the restaurant front, Google Lens gives an evaluation of the restaurant and calls information such as the price class. Interesting are actions, which can be executed directly on the smartphone on the basis of the photographed information. Google showed the label of a WLAN router that includes SSID and password. If this sticker is photographed with the Google Lens, the Google Assistant connects the smartphone directly to the WLAN without any further intervention by the user.
Nano-SIM, eSIM and castrated modem
As speculated in advance, the pixel 2 is actually (also) equipped with an eSIM, but this does not (yet) play a role for the German market, but is designed as a pilot project for Google’s Project Fi. A normal SIM slot in nano format both devices offer as well. Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone are exclusive provider partners in Germany, but the devices also come into free trade. The Qualcomm LTE modem integrated into the SoC can probably not fully exploit Google due to the antenna layout. Of 1 Gbit / s in the downstream are in practice 800 Mbit / s usable, in the upstream are it only 75 instead of 150 Mbit / s.
Pixel smartphones cost 799 and 939 euros
Google offers the smaller pixel 2 in the colors black, white and blue gray with 64 GB of memory for 799 euro and 128 GB for 909 euro. The larger pixel 2 XL, however, is only available in black or black and white with 64 GB memory for 939 and 128 GB for 1,049 euros. The front of the smartphones are in any case black. Google offers the devices via its store from tomorrow for pre-order, the delivery should begin in about two weeks, for some configuration and color, however, Google also calls five to six weeks. Pre-buyers currently receive a free Google Home Mini worth 59 euros.
