iPhone X: Borderless OLED display and face ID cost 1,149 euros

iPhone X: Randloses OLED-Display und Face ID kosten 1.149 Euro

For the ten-year iPhone anniversary, Apple today presented in Cupertino the iPhone X as a new top model. It is Apple’s first smartphone with OLED display, which occupies almost completely the entire front. The fingerprint sensor Touch ID had to give way, replaced by the face scanner Face ID.

iPhone X comes with HDR-capable OLED display

Apple installed in the iPhone X the largest smartphone display of the company so far. At 5.8 inches, the OLED screen extends over the entire front of the unit. These are 1.1 inches as well as 0.3 inches more than the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. Nevertheless, the iPhone X is not Apple’s largest smartphone ever. Because the edges of the case are particularly narrow, the iPhone X positions itself in terms of size between the two models offered so far. Like the iPhone 8, the new display is a true-tone panel, as well as HDR 10 and DolbyVision. With the latter two features, it is made up of the cheaper iPhone 8.

Face ID solves Touch ID and should be safer

In order to be able to integrate the display into the front of the display, Apple had to do a bit of trickery and even touch the Touch ID, which has been established since the iPhone 5s. For the front camera, the earphone and parts of the sensor system there is a cutout in the upper part of the display. The display of the operating system was adapted accordingly to iOS 11 to this new design. To get back to the Homescreen, a wipe from the bottom of the screen must be carried out to the center of the screen. This works on iOS 11 from any app.

In the recess hides however still more: Face ID is called Apples detachment for Touch ID. Instead of the fingerprint, the user’s face is now used to unlock the smartphone and pay with Apple Pay. However, Apple does not just focus on a simple 2D view of the head, but also captures an elaborate 3D model. For this purpose tens of thousands of points are projected and recorded again. Face ID also works in daylight, but the iPhone needs to be raised as in the competition. Face ID has a higher security than Touch ID. Data processing is performed in the Secure Enclave of the SoCs.

The iPhone X is characterized by the OLED display, the compact design and face ID of its sister models iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, which are also presented today. Inside the smartphone, however, many of the same components are used.

A11 Bionic for all new iPhones

For drive also provides in the iPhone X Apple’s own SoC-new development A11 Bionic. Bionic stands for Apple as before fusion for a system on a chip, which is equipped with different CPU cores. If the iPhone 7 (plus) in the A10 Fusion still had a total of four cores, divided into Hurricane for much power and Zephyr for energy-saving operation, the new A11 Bionic has six cores. The number of Monsoon baptized high-performance cores has left Apple at two, but the new low-power Mistral cores now have four. Apple promises a 25 percent higher performance on the high-performance cores and 70 percent more power on the low-power cores than the A10 Fusion. The new graphics unit is developed by Apple itself, 30 percent faster than the A10 Fusion GPU and requires half as much energy at the same power. The new chip has 4.3 billion transistors.

Dual camera with better telephoto

But what do you do with so much raw power in a smartphone? For example, edit video material in 4K with 60 FPS. This is one of the innovations of the updated iPhone camera. So far, 4K material could be recorded with a maximum of 30 FPS, 60 FPS were reserved for Full HD. If you film with 240 FPS in slow motion, the new iPhones can choose 1080p instead of 720p as the resolution.

In addition, the iPhone X at the camera by two new features from the iPhone 8 off. The iPhone X now offers on the telephoto a f / 2.8 to f / 2.4 improved optics. For the first time, the second sensor is also stabilized by an OIS.

Cordless charging as with the iPhone 8

The iPhone X is Apple’s third smartphone, which can be recharged wirelessly. For the first time, there is an alternative to cable-bound charging via Lightning. The socket inserted with the iPhone 5 keeps Apple for the iPhone X however. As with the iPhone 7, there is no more jack for 3.5 mm jack. The iPhone X is again protected against the ingress of water and dust according to the IP67 standard.

Availability and price

The iPhone X comes on the market much later than the iPhone 8. Apple announces the 27th of October for pre-orders and wants to deliver the smartphone from 3 November and regular in the trade offer. The iPhone X will give it in black and silver with memory configurations of 64 GB and 256 GB. The basic price of 64 GB is 1,149 Euro, the model with more memory costs 1,319 Euro.
