One day before the introduction of the new iPhones Xiaomi also shows two new models. The Mi Mix 2 and Mi Note 3, the successor to the nearly rimless Mi Mix (test) and the OLED model Mi Note 2 (test), both presented for the first time around eleven months ago.
Narrow frame, smaller display
The Mi Mix 2, like its predecessor, is based on an almost frameless design, but it is refined. In particular, the “chin”, which among other things houses the front camera, is according to Xiaomi twelve percent smaller than its predecessor. The rest of the design is similar to the first Mi mix at first sight in many parts, differences can be found in detail. Once again the case is made of ceramic. However, Xiaomi differs from two versions: the Mi Mix 2 and the Special Edition. The first version is based on a ceramic case with an aluminum frame. The special edition is made entirely of a ceramic unibody.
In the display Xiaomi follows other manufacturers with frameless smartphones like Samsung with the S8 (test) or LG with the G6 (test): The previously used display in the 17: 9 format differs a new one with 18: 9. In the diagonal, the screen measures 5.99 inches at a resolution of 1.080 × 2.160 pixels, the predecessor came to 6.4 inches diagonally and 1.080 × 2.048 pixels.
New neckline for the earphone
Instead of the piezoelectric ceramic for the sound transmission of telephone calls, the Mi Mix 2 is a kind of ordinary earphone accommodated in a small cutout at the top edge. The sound should be produced in the unit by a loudspeaker and then output via a tube to the opening. However, due to the narrow frame, there is no optical proximity sensor again, Xiaomi retains the Mi Mix’s infrared-based counterpart. A jack connection is no longer installed.
Also the camera, which in the test of the first Mi Mix did not convince at the flagship level, the manufacturer has revised. The now used IMX386-sensor from Sony offers 1.25 μm pixel and an optical image stabilization. The camera corresponds to the main camera of the Mi 6 with dual camera. The resolution is 12 megapixels. The ring around the camera should consist of 18-carat gold.
Snapdragon 835 with belt 20
The top model from the Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 835 Mobile Platform, which is also available in the Mi 6, also ensures performance in the new generation. The system-on-a-chip is equipped with 6 GB of RAM in the regular and 8 GB in the Special Edition. The latter always comes with 128 GB of flash memory, but the normal version in configurations with 64, 128 or 256 GB, an expansion via microSD card is not possible. Unlike its predecessor, the Mi Mix 2 supports a number of other LTE bands, a total of 43 frequencies are covered. This also includes all tapes used in Germany, in particular 3, 7, 8 and 20.
Mi Note 3 is a larger Mi 6
The Mi Note 3, unlike its predecessor, no longer comes with a curved display on both sides, but only with slight curves. The design is reminiscent of the already shown Mi 6, which Xiaomi on some comparative pictures also explicitly juxtaposes. Because the Mi Note 3 with its 5.5-inch display is somewhat larger and also the technique is similar, it reminds of a kind of big Mi 6. This is how the manufacturer sees it and describes the model as ” Mi 6 with a larger one Screen “.
Snapdragon 660 in operation
However, the hardware is the same: While the predecessors and also the Mi 6 are top-of-the-range models, the Mi Note 3 comes with the Snapdragon 660 instead of the 835. This system-on-a-chip is by the cryo -260 cores, but the 835 Mobile Platform draws from it thanks to the stronger Cryo 280 cores and the more powerful GPU. In addition, there are 6 GB RAM as well as 64 or 128 GB of non-expandable memory.
Two cameras with zoom
Like the Mi 6, the Mi Note 3 is based on a dual camera, the predecessor was still waiting with a camera. According to Xiaomi, the camera comes with an optical zoom, conceivable here is an effect based on the two cameras, to create with little or no loss a slight zoom. Both cameras have a resolution of 12 megapixels, one sensor acts as a wide-angle lens and one as a telephoto lens with a focal length equivalent to the picture format of 27 or 52 mm. Also new is the position of the fingerprint sensor, which now sits on the front and no longer on the back. The front and back are again made of glass, the two sides are held together by a frame of aluminum. The battery provides 3,500 mAh nominal charge.
Rates and availability
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 in the regular version costs 422 (3,299 yuan), 460 (3,599 yuan) or 511 euro (3,999 yuan), depending on the storage equipment. The Special Edition costs about 601 (4,699 yuan) euros. The Mi Note 3 costs about 320 (2,499 yuan) or 371 Euro (2,899 yuan) depending on the memory. Not included in the prices are any surcharges for the import and customs as well as margin of the dealers, so the prices for a purchase from Germany will be higher.
