The number of mobile broadband subscriptions increases, while GSM is now at sunset

Data generated by mobile devices has increased 67% over the past year, according to data from the recent Ericsson Mobility Report. Over 7,7 billion SIMs would be active in the world, more than one for each individual on Earth, with a 6% increase on an annual basis.

Unique users touched 5.3 billion, with China inevitably dragging the market with 19 million new subscriptions, followed by India (+17 million), Indonesia and Ghana. The number of mobile broadband connections, LTE, grew faster, which saw a growth of 260 million subscriptions compared to the previous quarter.

There are already 4.8 billion SIM enabled for the 4G, a fact that pushes the most obsolete technologies into sunset. While 3G connections are on the rise, 30 million more than last year, GSM / edge ones are down sharply, 170 million less than last year.

The growth of data traffic certainly contributes to social networks and, in part, even more, video platforms such as YouTube.
