Just before this year’s WWDC the makers of the Photoshop alternative for the Mac surprised with a teaser, which indicated a new app. While Apple’s developer conference was nothing to hear from a possible new or pro version of Pixelmator. Now the image processing program is almost finished and will be released this year.
Whether the new Pro version also means the end of the parent pixelmator, is not known. Also the price of the new app is not yet fixed; they are only available in the App Store. The developers promise numerous new features. This includes, in addition to a fresh interface design that represents more functions, the implementation of the technologies with which Apple wants to score in the future, including Artificial Intelligence. The core ML framework is used to automatically analyze and recognize numerous properties of the photos, including layers and objects.
The app is closely intertwined with macOS, uses iCloud, the touch bar of new MacBooks, supports RAW with multiple layers, is now even better with Photoshop files and also the new image format HEIF read, which Apple with iOS 11 introduces.
Pixelmator currently costs 33 euros, the company also offers a version for iOS.
