After many rumors and leaks, Lenovo officially presented the new Moto X4 at the IFA 2017. The smartphone is located in the middle class and is to convince mainly by the waterproof design and the camera. In addition, the already known Moto Z2 Force includes new Moto Mods to Germany.
Waterproof glass housing
The Moto X4 is after a long time again an officially IP68 water-resistant smartphone of the brand and after two years break a new model of the X series. More recent models were only protected against splashing water or were provided with a water-repellent coating for the surface. The housing consists of Gorilla Glass from Corning on both sides, the exact variant is still unclear.
Dual camera with wide angle
As a further feature Lenovo highlights the dual camera, which is based on a sensor with 12 megapixels (f / 2.0, 1.4μm pixel size) and one with 8 megapixels (f / 2.2, 1.1μm pixel size). The second camera with lower resolution is intended for wide angle shooting in 120 degrees. Among other things, the camera should provide intelligent detection of landscapes. The autofocus operates with phase detection. In addition to a detection for depth of image, there is currently also a beta, the possibility of black-and-white recordings as well as the background of an image to replace. The front camera comes with LED on the front and 16 megapixels therefore. An adaptive low-light mode with four megapixels is to provide in low light conditions for better self-portraits.
Snapdragon 630, Full HD and Amazon Alexa
The Dispaly of the Moto X4 is 5.2 inches large and dissolves with Full HD, resulting in a sharp image point density of 424 ppi. Technically, Lenovo relies on an LTPS panel with IPS addition. Under the hood, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 Mobile Platform with eight cortex A53 cores is plugged into two quad-clustered clusters. The maximum clock frequency of the performance cluster is 2.2 GHz. The Adreno 508-type GPU clocks at a maximum of 650 MHz. In addition, depending on the region and variant, there are three or four gigabytes of RAM as well as 32 or 64 gigabytes of flash memory. The latter is theoretically up to two TByte per microSDXC. There will also be a dual-SIM option.
Other features include support for Galileo for location determination, Bluetooth 5.0 including Low Energy, a 3,000 mAh rechargeable battery and a fingerprint sensor. For data transmission, USB Type C is available, according to which standard this is specified, is currently still open. The operating system is Android 7.1, next to the Google Assistant is also Amazon Alexa ready. Added to this are the additions of Lenovo’s Moto Actions.
Moto Z2 Force and new Moto Mods for Europe
While the Moto X4 is a worldwide premiere, Lenovo has also announced the last month’s Moto Z2 Force for Europe. The smartphone follows as a high-end variant on the mid-range model Moto Z2 Play (Test). The rugged smartphone is among other things to convince with a break-proof display and top equipment. Unlike the recently shown version, the Z2 Force will appear according to the available information in the new markets with 6 GB of RAM. After the update on Android 8.0 (test), the Z2 Force is also to receive Bluetooth 5.0. Like the entire Moto Z series, the Z2 Force is also compatible with Moto Mods and can be extended with corresponding modules. This includes the 360-degree camera shown with the official presentation of the Z2 Force as well as the gamepad shown on the MWC 2017.
Prices and availability
Both smartphones are expected to hit the market in September. The Lenovo Moto X4 appears in black and blue for 399 euros, the Z2 Force in the colors black, gold and gray (exclusively for Deutsche Telekom) for 799 euros.
