Android Oreo: Version 8.0 is ready and distributed as an update

Android 8.0 is ready, Google has announced on the Android blog. The name is also known: Android O is called Android Oreo. The update is already distributed, but only current devices from Google are considered. It is also possible to download the factory images.

Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 from Google are too old

With the chosen name, Google remains the tradition to miss the main versions of Android the name of sweets or sweets, faithfully. The octopus in the fourth preview for developers should have been a deliberate misleading.

Google itself supports the pixel and pixel XL (test), Pixel C, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X and the Nexus Player. In this round of the update, the Nexus 6 and the Nexus 9 were covered by the raster, which had been considered for Android 7.0. According to Google’s support site, there has been no guarantee for the availability of Android updates for the Nexus 6 and the Nexus 9 since last October. Security updates are to be offered until at least October this year. The support for pixel and pixel XL updates will expire in October 2018, while security updates are scheduled until October 2019.

Until and other smartphone manufacturers such as Huawei, LG, Samsung or Sony will eventually follow, will have to show in the course of this and the next year. With appropriate announcements is to be expected soon.

Instructions: Install Android 8.0

If you want to install Android 8.0 without data loss, and especially easy to install, it is best to wait for distribution as a so-called over-the-air update (OTA). Google has already begun, but depending on the region, it may take several days for all Nexus and pixels to be updated. With a trick, the OTA update can also be installed immediately. If you register for the Android Betaprogramm, the final update is offered immediately – but only here for Google devices, which receive the update.

For an impatient and above all savvy user, Google also offers the installation via a Factory Image. For this to work, the Android Debug Bridge must first be installed via the Android SDK and the bootloader of the device must be unlocked. When the latter happens for the first time, this results in a data loss. Therefore, installation over a factory image should not be the first choice for inexperienced users. Meanwhile, Google has released the images.

These are major innovations of Android 8.0

Android 8.0 has a new picture-in-picture mode, reminding you of the long-standing small video of the YouTube app. An app can now be dragged over the home button into a small window, which is placed over a second app. The position of the small window can be determined freely by the user in order not to hide important controls of the other open app.

In addition, Androids has always had a powerful system for notifications of a feature from iOS: From now on, new app notifications for this app are displayed on the app icon of the home screen. By holding the app icon long (since Android 7.1 possible) you can jump into a new menu for the associated notifications. The color of the point for notifications is automatically routed to Google by the colors of the app icon. In general, developers do not need to rewrite the code for a single line of code, the feature works on Android Oreo simply by itself after updating the operating system.

Improved input suggestions, smarter markup

Two new features are dedicated to filling out text fields, copying and pasting text. The so-called Autofill with Google now works inter-devicely also in interaction with Android Oreo. This means that often typed words like a username are automatically suggested for the corresponding text fields. The new cunning text selection automatically marks contiguous words such as addresses or names, instead of having to select them individually. In the case of telephone numbers, street names or e-mail addresses, the appropriate app is now automatically proposed.

Google PlayProtect is one of the most visible changes in Android Oreo. Within the Play Store, Google makes PlayPrekt visible on any Android device running Google Play in the background: reviewing apps for harmful behavior. Google monitors daily the behavior of more than 50 billion applications. If malicious behavior of an app is detected, Google disables or locks the app in the Play Store. As it is about the state of the installed apps, PlayProtect is now visible to the user, instead of running the feature silently in the background.

Google also promises longer durations

Optimizations under the hood of the operating system should lead to Android Oreo as before Android 7.0 Nougat (test) on the pixel devices on average twice as fast starts as previous Android versions. Google also promises that Android Oreo gently works with system resources, which should reduce energy consumption and extend battery life. Apps that use relentless resources in the background, it is due to new monitoring measures in Android O no longer give. For developers, there are new options in Android Studio to help optimize the app’s resource consumption during development.

ComputerBase will release a test of the final version of Android 8.0 Oreo on Tuesday.
