Less telecom customers – After a long time Telekom again recorded a decline in its mobile customers in Germany. On the other hand, Telekom was able to further expand its service revenues in the mobile communications business.
Telekom loses customers again
For the first time since the fourth quarter of 2014, the number of Deutsche Telekom’s mobile subscribers declined in the second quarter of 2017. With 42,011 million customers as of June 30, the number of customers declined by 103,000 compared to the previous quarter. While the number of prepaid customers rose by 83,000 to 16.927 million , the number of contract customers declined by 186,000 to 25.084 million .
The number of fixed-line lines also declined by 171,000 to 19.477 million in the quarter just ended. The proportion of IP-based connections rose to 10.351 million. In terms of broadband connections, however, Telekom recorded growth, with the number of connections increasing by 46,000 to 13,035 million compared to the previous quarter.
According to own data, 3.4 million customers already use a MagentaEINS bundle product from landline and mobile communications. Compared to the previous year, Telekom was able to increase the number of customers by 900,000. The number of Entertain customers exceeded the three million mark for the first time at the end of the second quarter.
Telekom LTE network coverage at 93 percent
The use of the mobile Internet is still unbraked. Compared to the first quarter of 2017, data volume rose by ten percent. Compared to the previous year, the increase was 61 percent . In order to meet the demand for mobile data, the Telekom LTE network will be further expanded. The Telekom LTE network cover was at the end of June according to own data at 93 percent .
In addition to the mobile networks, Telekom is also expanding the network of its fast fiber-optic connections. The customer households, which are connected via fiber optics or vectoring, rose by 622,000 to 8.2 million .
Telecom sales continue to grow
On the other hand, Telekom’s revenues continue to show strong growth in sales. In the second quarter of 2017, the total turnover of the Telekom Group increased by 6 percent year-on-year to EUR 18.890 billion . The continued high growth rates at T-Mobile US contributed particularly to the increase in sales. Compared to the previous year, service revenues rose by 8.5 percent to 7.3 billion dollars. While the total turnover climbed by 9.7 per cent to 10.2 billion dollars.
At the same time, Telekom’s total revenues in Germany rose by 0.6 percent to EUR 5.371 billion . In terms of service sales, Telekom was the only network operator to increase its sales by 0.8 percent despite regulatory effects.
