LG brings the so far only available in Japan V20 Pro – a smaller version of the V20 – under a new name as Q8 this week to Europe. The smartphone features two displays, three cameras and a Snapdragon 820 as a system-on-a-chip.
The LG Q8 is a V20 Pro for the local market, which in turn is a shrunk V20. This means first of all that the smartphone inherits the second screen for the V-series. Above the 5.2-inch display with 2.560 × 1.440 pixels is a small status display that measures 2.1 inches. It offers 1,040 × 60 pixels and serves as storage space for fast links to apps and contacts.
Main camera with up to 135-degree wide angle
In addition to the additional display sits the first of three cameras. The Selfie camera offers 5 megapixels and a 120 degree wide-angle lens with f/1.9 aperture to bring several people or more of the subject behind the user into the picture. On the back is a typical 16-megapixel camera with 16 and 8 megapixels for LG flagship models, the latter being equipped with a wide-angle lens covering 135 degrees with f/2.4 aperture. With the main lens with 16 megapixels, it is 78 degrees with f/1.8 aperture. The design of the dual camera thus corresponds to that of the LG G5 (test).
Snapdragon 820 and Quad-DAC
As a system-on-a-chip, LG is using the not-so-fresh Snapdragon 820 (Test) from Qualcomm, which, however, is still not one of the slow SoCs. In the top model G6 (test), the Snapdragon 821 is a slightly faster version of the same Qualcomm chip. The Snapdragon 820 offers four cryogenic cores with up to 2.15 GHz and 1.59 GHz as CPU as well as an Adreno 530 as a GPU. The SoC pairs LG with 4 GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 32 GB of UFS memory, which can be expanded by up to 2 TB microSD card.
The Q8 also includes a 3,000 mAh rechargeable battery with Quick Charge 3.0, the ESS Technology-derived Quad-DAC, which is missing the G6 itself, connectivity for LTE Cat. 12, WLAN-ac, Bluetooth 4.2 LE, NFC and USB type C. The hardware is in a water-resistant housing with IP67 certification and back of aluminum.
Price is probably at 599 euros
According to LG, the Q8 with Android 7.0 will be available this week in the color “Urban Titan” on key markets in Europe. LG Germany can not yet say whether Germany is meant. The applicable price is also unknown, but the Q8 in Italy is offered for 599 euros.
