Packaging equipment

ASRock X370 Taichi comes in a large black-and-white box with a plastic handle. On the obverse depicts some absolutely not associated with computer components gears, and is the name of the board model.

On the reverse side of the box briefly describes all the features of the board, and shows the characteristics listed connectors on the rear panel.

In addition to the already familiar information in the form of a serial number and batch number on the sticker from the end of the box indicate the charge, net weight and gross weight, as well as the country of production.

The latter suddenly found Vietnam and China is not ubiquitous or even Taiwan.

Supplied with the board are two pairs of cables with SATA-latches cap to the rear panel, rigid connecting bridge for SLI and two antennas for wireless communication.

In addition, in the box you will find the operating instructions, DVD with drivers and utilities, sticker ASRock and various reminders. On the company saves bonuses, but they are unlikely to lack of complete cards can be attributed to the shortcomings of this model, because it is available its classmates.

We add that in Russia ASRock X370 Taichi can be purchased at a price of 14.3 thousand rubles and that its warranty period is three years.

Design and Special Features

ASRock X370 Taichi performed on almost black PCB with applied at him white pattern all the same gears. If not for this figure and not the white plastic cover on the back and the sound section zone, the fee would be completely black.

We can not say that the design of new items is boring, but at the same time it is not so bright and defiant, like the boards of other manufacturers. designers hand touched as a radiator on the power supply circuits of the CPU and the chipset heatsink flat.

Form factor motherboard – ATX, ie its dimensions are 305 × 244 mm.

Schematic layout of the main elements and controllers on the board is given in the instruction manual.

On the rear panel drew the attention of the wireless unit and the lack of video outputs. The latter, in our opinion, it is the right decision, because on motherboards of this class are generally used discrete graphics cards and embedded video idle idle. Yes and no in Ryzen yet no embedded video. Why, then, to take a place on the back?

Unfortunately, in the case of ASRock X370 Taichi these places remained unfilled, although would not hurt to add here at least a couple of the USB-port, which is on the panel of eight pieces, including two high-speed USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C and Type-A. In addition, the panel displayed Clear CMOS button, a combined PS / 2 port, a network RJ-45 connector, the optical S / P-DIF and five 3.5-mm audio jacks.

Without radiators and plastic casing board looks more interesting than them.

The first thing to note the increased thickness of the copper layers in the PCB ASRock X370 Taichi, which allows for lower temperatures and greater stability during acceleration.

But the processor socket Socket AM4 is the most that neither is an ordinary, without modification, gold and hole sensor.

At the moment, supported by all processors, released in a constructive version AM4.

The ASRock claim shestnadtsatifaznoy system CPU power, but in fact there are eight phases with real doublers, of which there are six in the processor. Nevertheless, we can say that this is one of the best power systems for AMD Ryzen processors.

With such enhanced supply chain up to 300 watts total capacity of the processor, according to ASRock, achieves a reduction in the temperature of the PCB and mosfetov overclocking processors.

For power management processor system board responds PWM controller IR35201 production International Rectifier.

In addition, ASRock X370 Taichi – one of the few boards with an external clock: here his name ASRock Hyper BCLK Engine II, but in fact it is a microprocessor ICS 9VRS4883BKLF.

board Developers treated with standard 24- and 8-pin power connector without the use of additional.

Released in Taiwan on the 29th week of last year chipset AMD X370 applies to version A2 and is in contact with her through the thin heat sink thermal pad.

Externally entirely conventional (non-metallized membrane) slots DDR4 standard RAM latches are equipped with only one hand. Additionally, the companies claim to cover the contacts inside the slot 15-micron gold plating.

The specifications of the board officially supports modules c frequency of 3200 (OC), 2933 (OC), 2666 (OC), 2400, 2133 and 1866 MHz, XMP profiles (Extreme Memory Profile), and provides a list of past check-ins with the notes, which are more and dispersed on the board.

Memory power two-phase system, headed by the controller uP1674P.

The board only five PCI-Express slots, two of which are metalized shell, and the upper of this pair also got a 15-micron gold plating on the contacts – this slot in theory should be the most frequently used.

Two graphics cards in these slots can work in x8 / x8 mode, that is supported by NVIDIA technology 2-way SLI and AMD 2-way CrossFireX. The performance fee for some reason, officially supports Quad-ligament – probably we are talking about dual video cards. Switching modes of slots assigned to a pair of multiplexers NXP’s L04083B.

The switches help to work with PCI Express-slot goes and chip ASM1184e.

Lower PCI Express x16 2.0 can work only in x4 mode, and two short PCI Express 2.0 – exclusively in x1.

Outfitted ASRock X370 Taichi already ten SATA ports 3 with a capacity of up to 6 Gb/s, eight of which are implemented features AMD X370 processor and chipset.

Supports the creation of RAID levels 0, RAID 1 and RAID 10, NCQ technology, AHCI and Hot Plug. More work two independent SATA-port controller provides ASMedia ASM1061.

Of course, there are on the board and two high-speed M.2 port with support for both PCI Express-, and SATA-drives. However, in the case of ASRock X370 Taichi only one port (top) is called Ultra M.2 and has a bandwidth of up to 32 Gbit / s. It can be installed drives length from 42 to 80 mm.

In turn, the second bandwidth can not exceed M.2 20 Gb / s, moreover, it divides the line PCI-PCI Express to the fifth slot. It is possible to establish long drives 3.0, 4.2, 6.0 or 8.0 cm. The most receptive SSD length 11.0 cm plate are not supported. Are not provided, and the plate-heat spreaders on these slots, which can be attributed to the shortcomings of this model.

Gigabit LAN controller on ASRock X370 Taichi realized by the microprocessor the Intel I211AT.

RJ-45 connector is protected by Lightning / ESD Protection technology. There are on the card and the wireless network interface that supports Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac and Bluetooth 4.2 / 3.0 +, capable of operating in two bands (2.4 / 5.0 GHz) and the transmission rate to 433 Mbit / s. To conduct software optimization of network adapters and application settings to help ASRock XFast the LAN.

Of USB-ports on the new ASRock motherboard in abundance. Features AMD X370 chipset implemented ten USB 3.0 ports, six of which are on the rear panel and four more can take two internal connectors on the PCB.

In addition, the chipset has four ports USB 2.0, also intended for wiring in the housing or extension strips. Not forgotten, and high-speed ports are USB 3.1 Gen2 with bandwidth up to 10 Gbit / s, the controller realized ASMedia. Both ports – Type-A and Type-C – are located on the rear panel, wherein the port Type-C technology supports fast charge (amperage to 3 A). Providing these functions are assigned to the controller ASMedia ASM1543.

Sound on ASRock X370 Taichi realized already familiar to us from your 7.1-channel HD-audio codec Realtek ALC1220. Traditionally, it gave both hardware and software optimizations included in the overall concept Purity Sound 4.

The hardware optimizations include the use of Japanese premium capacitors Nichicon, headphone amplifier Texas Instruments NE5532, the wiring of the left and right channels on separate PCB layers and isolated from the rest of the printed circuit board non-conducting stripe zone sound elements.

Besides the above, the board set plated audio connectors (including internal to the front panel).

For the monitoring function, I / O operation and providing a combined port PS / 2 on board controller responds Nuvoton NCT6779D-R.

As for the fans, by the ASRock X370 Taichi, you can connect five pieces – and all with support for PWM. One of the connectors has an increased capacity and can provide power energy consuming devices requiring amperage to 1.5 A, such as pump liquid cooling systems.

On the bottom edge of the PCB board all familiar, but we note the presence of an indispensable indicator POST-codes.

Directly on the PCB area is highlighted only chipset heatsink, but the board allows you to implement a system of external lighting AURA, for which it is provided to as many as two connectors.

The cooling system uses two board parts aluminum radiator with thermal spacers, connected six-millimeter heatpipe, and the chipset mounted on a flat radiator with thermal pads.

Features UEFI BIOS

ASRock X370 Taichi is equipped with a 128-bit BIOS chip with the ability to restore from USB-drive through the corresponding port. Main board testing were carried out on the BIOS version 2.30 on 10 May 2017 with the support of AGESA version 1.0.0.4a. However, when you are reading this article probably already become available and more recent BIOS version with support AGESA 1.0.0.6 and the ability to work with the faster RAM.

The BIOS main window displays basic information about motherboard, CPU and RAM.

Next comes a section with parameters overclocking motherboard, CPU and RAM. There is also a real-time display of voltage.

Saving acceleration profile system is available in the same settings window, which, in my opinion, correctly and logically. Here the selected frequency of operation of RAM and its basic timings.

Just below is a block BIOS settings relating to the stabilization voltage. Processor Load-Line Calibration has five levels stabilize.

It continues the theme of the processor settings and the Advanced section of the chipset.

Here you can find settings related to power saving features, as well as configuring the ports and controllers that are connected to the chipset.

It is interesting that AMD CBS subsection duplicated basic timings of RAM.

Next comes the weight unique to AMD X370 chipset and AMD Ryzen settings, the study of which fit to allocate a separate article.

In a special BIOS section contains built-in utilities.

Next comes the main section to the monitoring and adjustment of the fan connected to the board.

Integrated utility FAN-Tastic Tuning to select one of the four profiles work for all fans at once or individually, as well as to carry out manual adjustment of the speed curve depending on the temperature.

Completes our short jog through BIOS ASRock X370 Taichi partition system boot options.

We add that no serious problems during the BIOS of the motherboard ASRock X370 Taichi we did not have, though the web and found the information that specific BIOS settings related to overclocking the processor or memory, strive to not remain on the board . Us with such problems, fortunately, I was not able to face.

Overclocking and stability

Stability Checking overklokerskogo capacity and performance motherboard ASRock X370 Taichi was conducted in closed case at room temperature of about 24 degrees Celsius in the following hardware configuration:

  • Motherboard: ASRock X370 Taichi (AMD X370, Socket AM4, BIOS 2.30 on 10.05.2017, AGESA 1.0.0.4a);

  • control and monitoring panel: Zalman ZM-MFC3;
  • PSU: Corsair AX1500i Digital ATX (1500 W, 80 Plus Titanium), 140 mm fan.

Testing was conducted under the Microsoft Windows operating system version 10 Pro 1703 (15063.296) with the installation of the following drivers:

  • motherboard chipset the Drivers the Chipset AMD’s – 17.10 on 21.04.2017;
  • video card drivers – the GeForce 382.19 Hotfix on 11/05/2017.

System stability when overclocking we checked stress utility Prime95 29.1 build 16 and other benchmarks, and monitoring was carried out with the help of HWiNFO64 5.51-3145 versions and newer.

AIDA64 Extreme already fully knows the characteristics of ASRock X370 Taichi, which we give to the tests.

When you first run the board ASRock X370 Taichi in its BIOS, we only cut off those extra controllers and activated XMP memory, which successfully launched at a frequency of 2933 MHz with timings of 16-17-17-35 CR1.

The processor is also operating normally, and even in the initial version of the BIOS 1.40 demonstrated complete stability under load, despite the relatively high peak voltage – 1,280 V.

The maximum temperature of the processor does not exceed the mark of 49 degrees Celsius, which we consider a very good indicator.

Further, the motherboard BIOS has been updated to version 2.30, and we immediately began to study its overclocking abilities. Knowing from previous tests of motherboards based on AMD X370, that within our instance AMD Ryzen July 1700 is somewhere in the 3.9 GHz mark, we immediately started with this frequency, selecting the voltage level and LLC (Load-Line Calibration). After several hours of tests, it was found that the system passes all the tests without any errors in the processor voltage and 1.2925 in the second level of stabilization.

The maximum temperature of the processor after two long Prime95 test cycles reached 65.9 degrees Celsius.

A very good result, but we will stay in this is not going to. And then there were some interesting things. We exposed the processor frequency 3,925, 3,950 or even 4,000 GHz while increasing the voltage to different values - and stability tests, including Prime95, on ASRock X370 Taichi managed to successfully complete, but in the performance tests, we observed a decrease in performance, not their increase, as they should expect. As if the fire CPU overheating protection, or something else like that, although the temperature still does not exceed the mark of 70 degrees Celsius, and as a result of the further dispersal affects system performance negatively. Therefore, we switched to overclock RAM.

And here ASRock X370 Taichi could not express themselves as well as the ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero earlier, as the next step – the frequency of 3200 MHz – the same memory kit in any did not run on the board ASRock. Nor with automatic timings, or to manually inflated fee just does not start. Of course, this is only a special case of a combination with a particular pair of modules, and other memory models result may well be above. Therefore, everything we had on – is to try to understate the memory timings at the frequency of 2933 MHz. As a result, with 16-17-17-35 CR1 timings were reduced to 16-16-16-28 CR1.

Of course, this result can not be considered  outstanding, because in the “iron” forums are increasingly found reviews of the performance of certain memory modules on the new AMD platform with 3.2 GHz and timings of 14-14-14-26. However, the ASRock, like other manufacturers, there is still hope for AGESA 1.0.0.6 and newer versions of BIOS. But we move on to testing the performance board ASRock X370 Taichi.

Performance

ASRock X370 Taichi until we compared with the fastest (in our tests) card on the chipset AMD X370 – ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero , on which the same processor was overclocked to 3.9 GHz, the same frequency, but the memory was working at a frequency of 3.2 GHz, even with a higher latency than on ASRock. As we have excluded, say right benchmarks themselves are not too useful y-cruncher, but instead introduced a test video transcoding HWBOT x265 benchmark version 2.0.0.

Taichi X370 ASRock
AMD Ryzen July 1700 @ 3.9 GHz
DDR4 2 × 8 GB Evo X GeIL (GEX416GB3000C15ADC)
2,933 GHz 16-16-16-28 CR1
ROG Crosshair VI ASUS Hero
AMD Ryzen July 1700 @ 3.9 GHz
DDR4 2 × 8 GB Evo X GeIL (GEX416GB3000C15ADC)
3,2 GHz 18-17-17-32 CR1

Blender 2.78c
Corona 1.3 Benchmark
CINEBENCH R15 x64
3DMark 2.3.3693 64, Time Spy CPU test

What is interesting, in spite of the slightly less high-speed memory, the platform with the base in the form of a motherboard ASRock X370 Taichi manages to get ahead of the same configuration with the ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero in tests HWBOT x265 and CINEBENCH R15. But in other tests the advantage of a more expensive motherboard ASUS minimum.

Conclusion

So far we have tested, only three motherboards with chipset AMD X370, but now we can say with certainty that the ASRock X370 Taichi – one of the best. With more than enough CPU power supply system with twice the number of phases and the external clock, and a stable BIOS (version 2.30), Taichi now ready to provide the maximum level of performance and excellent overclocking potential. But there is still at least update with support AGESA 1.0.0.6 – let us hope that it will expand the capabilities of the board for overclocking RAM, further enhance AMD Ryzen performance.

But no limit to perfection, so ASRock X370 Taichi has room to grow. For example, I would like to draw the attention of the developers of the fact that the rear panel is not enough even a pair of USB (you can even version 2.0) are not supported M.2 format drives length of 11 cm, and heat spreaders-plate drives are not available in these connectors. And, like other manufacturers, one of the internal USB 3.0 can be done horizontally, the more that they are located next to each other. Everything else on this motherboard model is, today, including wireless network interface, for which do not have to pay extra, as is the case with competing cards.
