According to the forecast of Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments will increase by 7% in 2017. At the same time the average annual growth in shipments of smartphones with AMOLED-display for the period from 2017 to 2022 will amount to 14.9%. Against this backdrop, the number of shipped devices with LCD matrix will be reduced by an average of 0.4% annually.
Currently, the largest supplier of smartphones with AMOLED-display is the Samsung, but let them and other brands such as Moto, Oppo, Google or Huawei. It is expected that Apple iPhone 8, which will be announced this autumn, will also receive AMOLED-display.
At the same time, Strategy Analytics predicts preservation of 2017 and 2018 panels deficit based on AMOLED technology. This situation will cause increased competition among manufacturers of smartphones, but the “cream”, as always, will get only the big players who have close ties with suppliers. It is not difficult to guess that we are talking about the Samsung and Apple’s, which, according to analysts, will buy most of the curved AMOLED-display, while the lower rank vendors will focus mainly flat matrix based on this technology.
It should be noted that shortly before the publication of Strategy Analytics forecast its vision for the future of smartphones with AMOLED-display suggested experts from Digitimes Research. They believe that in 2021 the proportion of such devices will exceed half of the total number of phones shipped to market.
