Overview Mi Pad 3: updated tablet from Xiaomi

Rumors of output Xiaomi MiPad 3 were rapidly spread since December 2016 and, judging by the fact that the official sales of the model began only in April 2017 at the beginning of the year the tablet was still in the development phase.

Xiaomi fans have had a lot of hope that the third revision will receive an array of modern flagship “chips” such as having a built-in 4G-modem, fingerprint scanner or moisture protection. Unfortunately, whether the fear of a significant increase in the cost of, or in an effort to keep the classic design and functionality, but the company again went his own way and did not dare this time prevnosit fundamental changes in the technical stuffing of a tablet, which in comparison with MiPad 2 as follows :

Packaging equipment

It comes tablet in a white cardboard box with a picture of the manufacturer’s logo and information about the amount of RAM and internal memory.

The package, in addition to the tablet includes a user guide, charger cable and USB Type-C. That is, a complete set is about the same modest, like the Mi Pad 2.

Charger with flat pin plug, designed for 5V / 2A without the support of “fast charging”.

Appearance and controls

The design of the updated model virtually unchanged, it still resembles the iPad. On the right side are located the power button and volume rocker.

Bottom – connector USB Type-C to connect to the charger or PC.

Top – 3.5 mm jack for connecting a headset.

The front part is covered with black protective glass without shiny inscription «Mi».

Under the screen there are three touch-sensitive function keys with a milky-white backlight. The operating system provides the ability to disable them to prevent accidental presses in games, for example.

Above the screen is the eye of the front camera, light sensor and LED indication of events of the same, as well as touch buttons milky white.

The rear part of the housing is made of anodized aluminum.

Below are two mesh external speakers.

Top – peephole main camera and microphone opening.

The screen in the new model was similar MiPad 2 – it is the same 7.9-inch LCD display with a resolution of 2048 × 1536 pixels (aspect ratio 4: 3) and the density of dots per square inch of 326 ppi. It is worth mentioning that the main display settings are identical to those of the iPad Mini.

The display is made on the On-Cell technology, which provides no air gap between the glass and the screen: a minimum of glare, no inversion of colors, excellent color rendition combined with maximum viewing angles.

Ergonomics design

Externally, we face all the same metal Mi Pad 2 – fairly thin, light and portable, its dimensions are 200.4 × 132.6 × 6.95 mm, and weight – 328 grams.

The housing of the tablet has the same thickness all the way around the edges slightly rounded, so that it can be convenient for both hand-held and put in a small bag.

As already mentioned, the design was absolutely identical to the previous generation of the tablet and there is no absolutely no changes, and when you consider that Mi Pad 2 won its popularity, including due to the design, it becomes clear why the manufacturer has decided not to experiment.

Operating system

The operating system in the Xiaomi Mi Pad 3 preinstalled proprietary shell MIUI 8.2 to Android 7.0 base. To my surprise, despite the fact that I ordered a plate of the first, there has already been pre-installed “global” version of MIUI with support for Russian language and the Play Google services “out of the box.”

The operating system is not full, as it often happens, a lot of unnecessary programs, because there is only pre-standard apps and Android-client for accessing the Mi-account.

the need for long-term reading from the screen Mi Pad 3 has forced developers to maximize the properties of the display used, including at the program level, adding to the skin the opportunity to customize the color of the screen.

There is also a “read mode”, which includes, instead of the white yellow backlight, as well as another proprietary “chip” – a black and white display mode, in which all colors are replaced with shades of gray in accordance with the standard color profile, optimization of brightness and other image parameters. Reading from such a screen, it creates a feeling that you hold the device in his hands with “electronic ink”.

The shell is optimized for tablets, but some of the features of smartphones based MIUI also work – for example, three-finger swipe across the display screen allows you to get a screenshot.

“Iron” and performance

The main difference from Mi Pad 2 was the processor MediaTek MT8176. This mobile 6-core chip from MTK, working with a maximum clock frequency of up to 2.1 GHz per core. For graphics processing meets the embedded system IMG PowerVR GX6250 GPU 600 MHz.

The reason for the replacement was the fact that a huge number of customers complained about the performance of Mi Pad 2 and the main reason for this was not a weak iron (which by the way was quite good), and the processor Intel Atom X5-Z8500 and poor adaptation of applications – many programs simply takes off , and some even refused to run.

With regard to memory, Mi Pad 3 has 4GB of RAM and a 64 GB flash memory without expansion.

Information about the system of AIDA64.

Tablet has a fairly decent set of sensors which include an accelerometer, a light sensor, a sound, the orientation, the gyro and magnetic sensor that allows use with the tablet “smart-bag”.

Given the fact that the MediaTek MT8176 was released in late 2016, many developers adapt their applications for this processor. More powerful graphics provides good performance and frame rates in games.

Thus, in Antutu Benchmark v.6.2.7 device able to collect more than 80,000 “parrots” that can be considered quite a good result.

Some more popular test results.

In games, the tablet also showed a good side, and that is especially pleased – it is virtually not heated, even in demanding games, most likely at this positively affects the metal lid.

Wireless interfaces

The number of wireless interfaces at the Mi Pad 3 includes Bluetooth 4.1 and dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 / a / c. Module NFC, 3G / 4G and GPS in the plate, but there are support screen image transmission to a TV via Wi-Fi Display and fast data transfer with the help of Wi-Fi Direct.

With the quality of wifi-connection is no problem here, okay tablet keeps speed and makes it comfortable to surf the web spaces of even a few concrete walls from the access point.

The battery and autonomy

Compared with the previous version, in the Mi Pad 3 slightly increased the capacity of the battery to 6600 mAh – the results of measurements indicate that the declared value is close to reality.

On average, the battery life of the tablet can be up to about 8-12 hours at an average brightness of the display. Thus, for example, when testing an application PCMark with permanently active screen wifi fully charged battery discharged to 14% in 8 hours 33 minutes.

To fully charge the tablet takes about 3.5 hours.

And examples of camera shooting

The plate is equipped with two chambers: a front 5 Mn (aperture f / 2.0) and the main 13 Mn (aperture f / 2.2).

Built-in operating system, an application for photo-video shooting is very much simplified compared to the same Xiaomi smartphones. Here you will find a slow or fast shooting and multiple settings, only the most necessary in order to take a picture, and of the effects of several options.

As for the quality of the images, it is quite enough to make the Self, to talk in video chat or take a photo in good light. Here are a few examples.

Despite the fact that the Xiaomi Mi Pad 3 is almost like two peas in a pod similar to the previous model, the changes mainly concerned the filling of the tablet. Mi Pad 3 equipped with less whimsical to the processors, as well as performance graphics core.

Moreover, thanks to all of the same diagonal screen tablet remains sufficiently compact – 7.9 inches quite fit in a handbag or women’s student backpack. With a resolution of 2048×1536 pixels, reading, watching movies or playing games on it is very comfortable. Of course, the two chambers 13 and 5 megapixels are not distinguished quality, but who is particularly concerned about the tablet? But the built-in battery at 6600 mAh gives the opportunity to play and watching movies a little longer than the competition.
