Very soon the technology used in displaying, whether it be for TVs, smartphones, tablets, or wearable devices, could be undergoing a major revolution. In particular, it could triple the density of pixels in the same space, a solution that would primarily benefit virtual reality devices.
In fact, being closer to the eye, a greater density of pixels would guarantee the highest image quality, evidence of any defect and always sharp. The solution could come from a new technology, to which some researchers from the University of Central Florida are working, trying to eliminate the three static, red, green and blue subpixels that are normally used for color displaying.
In this way it would be possible to reduce the size of the individual pixels and consequently accommodate the triple in the same space, with a very high density. The biggest gains would come from the VR viewers market, but also smartphones, tablets and TVs would surely have a big advantage. At the moment, however, there is no indication that the search will be completed in a short time, so we will have to wait for more screen definitions.
