Getting Started with the Xiaomi Mi6: small and sturdy

The Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has known to impose its name in the smartphone market. However, its models remain complicated to find and it is necessary to pass on the sites of import to procure the terminals, like the recent Mi Mix or this new Mi6. A Mi6 that we imported from China. Please note that the model will soon be available for international import, with the presence of Google Play Store and the capture of all French frequency bands, which is not yet the case of the copy that we present to you right here.

Thanks to Gearbest for sending us the Xiaomi Mi 6 to take it in hand. You can find the Xiaomi Mi Mi 6 on GearBest for about 500 euros.

Before you start, here is the technical sheet of the smartphone.

A smartphone that does not disappoint, as each domain promises the best, as with the processor (a Snapdragon 835) or its RAM (6GB). The only disappointment comes from the screen, which remains wise enough by proposing 1080p “only”.

First contact

The first contact with the Xiaomi Mi6 is through the eyes, of course. A first contact less appreciable than the Xiaomi Mi Mix, for example. If the smartphone does not have to be ashamed of its design, it is said that Xiaomi has put less effort in this model, especially with a plastic shell that lets show a little game.

Let us welcome all the same forms pleasing to the eye and especially a successful overall shape that makes the smartphone hold the hand. Note that its weight of 168 grams does not appear inconvenient and its dimensions remain correct (145,2 x 70,5 x 7,5 mm).

Its fingerprint sensor is located on the front. It has the merit of being discreet and consists only of a small recess that one hardly sees.

Similarly, ceramic slices lessen the cheap side of the plastic. A slice on which the loudspeakers are housed, as well as the Type-C USB port and the SIM card traps. We did not talk about port jack and that is not an oversight. Like the iPhone 7, the Chinese manufacturer decided to do without port Jack. Why ? Good question, but it certainly is not to win in finesse, the smartphone making 7.5 mm thick, all the same. Rest assured, Xiaomi provided a USB-Type-C adapter – jack in the box.

Regarding the screen, Xiaomi remained very classic with an IPS LCD panel of 5.15 inches. Note that the Full HD resolution (1920 × 1080) could have been enhanced to reinforce the high-end appearance of the smartphone, a choice that Xiaomi did not. A remark that one makes only to quibble; Since a 1080p definition is largely sufficient on this screen diagonal.

A small power monster

No surprise on this side, the smartphone purrs, thanks to its powerful processor and its 6 GB of RAM. Here, Xiaomi serves us its overlay MIUI 8 on Android 7.1.1 Nougat. An overlay for the moment available only in its Chinese version, so virtually unusable as is in Europe, especially because of the language (only in English or in Chinese) and the lack of the Google Play application store. For now, no official French ROM is available to flash the device and make it usable in France. A matter of time.

But the international version of the smartphone will offer a software experience very similar to that of the Mi Mix, that is to say a pleasant experience that knows no hitch.

On the pure performance side, the Mi6 bluffed us, indeed, it reached the impressive score of 178,411 on Antutu, more than the score of 171,639 of the Galaxy S8. Here, Xiaomi offers a device that leaves behind the competition and that shows itself as the racing beast of the market at the moment.

On the camera side, Xiaomi has placed a dual 12-megapixel sensor that takes more than pleasant shots. Xiaomi also offers portrait mode in order to let you play on the sharpness of the backgrounds with its photo application. A photo application that does not differ from the one used on the MiMix.

Portrait mode blurs the background and smooths wrinkles and imperfections of the subject
