HTC has waited for all its competitors to launch their flagship to announce its new high-end smartphone. In fact, this launch date is not innocent since yesterday, the Taiwanese brand celebrated its 20 years. So, it is simultaneously in Taipei and New York that the Taiwanese firm has just announced its new HTC U11.
Before entering into the purely technical details, the big novelty around the HTC U11 concerns its new way of interacting with its smartphone. HTC is going to talk a lot about “Squeeze”. Why ? Simply because the U11 brings a new HTC Edge Sense user interface, which will allow you to launch actions by pressing the side edges, as if you “squeeze” a citrus fruit.
Haptic vibrations will allow you to recognize the action you have just done. One can thus press once or twice the smartphone and define the action that will go with it. In our demo, it was the launch of the camera in selfie mode and the possibility of taking the picture in the same way. In practice, we will really wait to use it a bit more before pronouncing, but for selfies, we found it rather practical. In the possible actions, you can launch any application, launch voice recordings, launch settings, take screenshots, and more. Because the HTC U11 is IP67, this new feature will work with both water and gloves. We note the arrival in July of an application, HTC Edge Companion which should allow you to define actions in the same applications.
Another novelty present in this HTC U11, a new microphone with low consumption has been integrated. The latter is active at all times. The goal is of course to be able to use Google Now and Alexa from Amazon which are both supported automatically by the U11. HTC Sense is also out of date and will also be updated with new features such as smart alarms, consumption of uses on your smartphone, a memory optimizer, and so on.
On the photo side, DXO has already been able to play with the new U11 and awards him an impressive DXO Mark Mobile score of 90, placing it in front of the Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy S8 / S8 +. There is a 12 Megapixel UltraPixel 3 sensor with 1.4μm pixels, a wide angle lens with optical stabilization and F / 1.7 aperture, a super fast AF, an AF Accoustic Focus for video that helps the main AF With the use of microphones, the HDR Boost, a dual-LED flash, recording videos up to 4K, 3D audio with the presence of 3 microphones. On the selfies side, you get a 16 megapixel backlit sensor with a wide angle lens that opens to F / 2.0, a front LED flash. If it is not UltraPixel, it will benefit from the sensitivity of UltraPixel technology, as present HTC.
As I mentioned above for audio, there are 3 microphones for video and / or audio recordings, HiRes Audio support, BoomSound Hi-Fi Edition technology which uses all the smartphone as Resonance, HTC U Sonic headphones that are USB-C and that are calibrated according to the morphology of your ears, active noise reduction and there will be, as standard, a USB-C adapter to 3.5mm jack. You will understand, there is no longer a 3.5mm jack, as on Apple’s iPhone 7. Finally we finish with a DAC supposed to be more efficient than those of competitors, to see.
More classic, there is the Liquid Surface Design design (already previewed on the HTC U Ultra) which allows to have a curved glass on both sides and surfaces to have different colors according to the angles. On the purely technical side, we find Android 7.1 with HTC Sense, an IPS Super LCD 5 curved 2.5D and Gorilla Glass 5 5.5 inches with a QuadHD definition, a 3000 mAh battery, fast charging Quick Charge 3.0 of Qualcomm, 4G Cat.16 (up to 1Gbps), a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, 64GB internal memory, a Micro-SD port, 4GB of RAM, WiFi ac, Bluetooth 4.2, USB- C compatible USB 3.1, a fingerprint reader on the front panel on the home button, all in a size of 153.99 × 75.99 × 7.99 mm for a weight of 168 grams.
Count 759 euros for an exit from June 1st in France. It will be available in Pearly Black, Chrome Irised, White Pearl and Sapphire Blue.
