Amazon is updating the Fire Portfolio and re-installing two of the currently four available tablets with Fire 7 and Fire HD 8. There is also an increase in children’s editions aimed at children. However, technical changes must be looked at with the magnifying glass.
SoC and memory unchanged
The new Fire 7 as well as the new Fire HD 8, like the predecessors, have a processor with four cores and a clock rate of 1.3 gigahertz. There is no information about the RAM from Amazon, the two previous models had a working memory of 1.0 gigabytes (Fire 7) and 1.5 gigabytes (Fire HD 8), obviously this continues. Also the storage space for your own apps remains the same with 16 or 32 gigabytes for the HD 8 as well as 16 gigabytes with the Fire 7. Both tablets can continue to expand with memory cards up to 256 gigabytes.
The current version 5.3.3 “Bellini” of Amazons Android derivative Fire OS based on Android 5.1 Lollipop is to be used as operating system.
Fire 7 with new display
The Fire 7 is thinner and lighter in the new generation, and has a more contrast-rich display, but still has a resolution of only 1,024 × 600 pixels at seven inches. Also in the new version of the Fire HD 8 the resolution remains unchanged with 1,280 × 800 pixels. In the predecessor model, this resolution was sufficient for a relaxed consumption of films and series, in the test of the Amazon Fire HD 8 in December 2016 the display quality proved to be good.
In both tablets, front and rear cameras are installed in VGA quality or with 2 megapixels. The battery life of the Fire 7 rises slightly by one hour to eight hours, the larger Fire HD 8 persists with a use of up to twelve hours.
Fire HD 8 now also in the Kids Edition
The only real innovation is the expansion of the Kids Edition next to the Fire 7 around the Fire HD 8. Like the smaller representative, it assumes all the properties together with larger main memory of the “normal” variants. The difference is, in addition to the included cover in the one-year content flat rate and the so-called “careless guarantee”, in which Amazon exchanges the tablet free of charge for a period of two years from the date of purchase even in the case of defects due to own fault.
Fire 7 is cheaper and more expensive
There are hardly any changes in the prices: Only the Fire 7 falls including advertising inserts to 54.99 euros – but only for Prime members. For other customers, however, the price increases to 69.99 euros. The previous model started last for all buyers at 59.99 euros.
Unchanged remains the Fire HD 8, which is for Prime members from 89.99 euros including advertising, otherwise for 109.99 euros to be purchased. For a device without advertising, 15 euros will be charged for both models. The two tablets of the Kids Edition, on the other hand, are available for 119.99 euros or 139.99 euros. As a result of the launch, Amazon also offers all four tablets in a multipack: when buying three of the new Fire tablets, buyers receive a 20% discount on their order.
All tablets can be pre-ordered immediately, according to the Amazon, the delivery is to be made on June 7, 2017.
