Sony Xperia XZ Premium: 960-FPS-Kamera, 4K‑HDR-Display und Snapdragon 835

More does not currently: Sony has introduced in Spain the Xperia XZ premium as the new top model of the Group. Highlights include the recently introduced camera sensor with 960 FPS slow motion and a 4K HDR display. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium is also the first smartphone of MWC 2017 Snapdragon 835th

New top model every six months

Sony keeps it cool for Mobile World Congress and continues its semi-annual rhythm for new smartphone flagships. On the basis of the above specifications, the Xperia is a major step forward for Sony XZ Premium. After the presentation on Monday morning ComputerBase has already tried the Xperia XZ Premium.

960-FPS sensor developed in-house

For the new camera Sony uses the presented just three weeks ago three-layer CMOS sensor with DRAM cache of its own design. In contrast to a classical structure two-layer sensor Sony has a DRAM plane between the pixel area and circuits which serves as a buffer. This new design allows according to Sony a very quick reading of the data.

Two of the most important new features of the sensor are the fast shooting stills and extremely slow slow motion that were not previously using smartphone cameras possible. An image with 19.3 megapixels to the sensor can read in 1/120 second. That was under the same conditions shot four times faster than the announced in February of last year Exmor RS IMX318 sensor that requires 30.1 seconds. Because the individual lines of the sensor are read so much faster, it’ll be a lot less for rolling shutter, which can lead to a distortion of fast-moving objects. Sony markets these properties for the Xperia XZ premium as Motion-Eye technology.

Slow motion can be made with the Xperia XZ premium of up to 960 frames per second in full HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. Full HD with 1,920 x 1,080 pixels maximum of 120 FPS are possible with today’s high-end smartphones. For 240 FPS the resolution even at high-end devices to 720p must be reduced.

The high-speed recording is passed initially buffered in 125 megabyte DRAM and then to the image processor (ISP) of the system-on-a-chip, a recording at normal speed can bypass the DRAM and processed directly in the ISP. This should allow videos that combine both recording modes seamlessly. The sensor can detect fast-moving object itself and automatically switch on the slow motion over the DRAM, says Sony. Changes to the image processor are not necessary for this.

4K-Display mit HDR

After the Xperia Z5 Premium IFA 2015, the new Xperia XZ Premium is the second smartphone from Sony, which is equipped with a 4K display. At 5.5 inches, it has a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, resulting in an impressive pixel density of 801 ppi. It is not yet known whether Sony the Android user interface natively renders in 4K or so permitted only at photos and videos like the Xperia Z5 premium. New is the HDR capability of the display, which will allow a high dynamic range and large differences in brightness in the presentation. Sony gives the maximum brightness of the display with 600 cd / m². Protects the display of the manufacturer with Gorilla Glass. 5

Qualcomm Snapdragon 835

the Xperia XZ Premium of a Qualcomm Snapdragon is driven 835. This is for the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 + Galaxy not so far the only recipient of the fast 10-nm chips. The Snapdragon 835 is in contrast to the Snapdragon 820/821 back of eight instead of four CPU cores. The cryo 280 is a semi-custom design ARM-based, which can overclock up to 2.45 GHz in performance clusters. The power cluster comes up to 1.9 GHz. As memory LPDDR4X RAM comes with 1866 MHz for use – of which Sony installed 4 gigabytes. The internal memory is 64 gigabytes and can be expanded via microSD card by up to an additional 2 terabytes. The connection to the outside is done with USB 3.1 Type C.

Water-resistant housing with glass inserts

Sony also typical of the Xperia XZ premium remains protected against the ingress of water and dust. The IP68 certification guarantees as specified by Sony a dust-proof housing, which is also protected against permanent submersion in fresh water at a depth of about one meter. The aluminum case takes many design features of the Xperia XZ from last autumn, but is now 5 provided on the front and back with a glass element made of Gorilla Glass. Above and below the display depending sits a speaker for true stereo sound.

The battery of the Xperia XZ Premium has a rated load of 3230 mAh (+11 percent compared to the XZ) and will hold up to two days with normal use, according to Sony. The included AC adapter is equipped with a quick charging function.

Android 7.1 nougat with assistant software

Not the Google Assistant as on the pixels and pixel XL, but a separate assistant software from Sony 7.1 nougat runs with Android on the Xperia XZ Premium. Sony’s smart action modes should be able to recognize recurring patterns of use and lead to the automation of these tasks. Thus, the user can set up “wizard Focus” as one of the daytime automatically blocks all notifications to be distracted at work. In “Good Night” mode, the phone can evenings reduce the brightness of the screen, turn off the sound and remind you to set an alarm for the next morning. All modes can be set individually by the user and enabled.
