256 is the magic number for the new announcements from SanDisk to the MWC 2017. Three new storage solutions offer 256 GB of NAND flash in and on the smartphone. INAND 7350 is the name of the internal chip in the eMMC standard. IXpand and Connect Wireless Stick extend the storage space of iOS devices.
INAND 7350 offers 256 GB as eMMC
The portfolio of embedded flash drives, which are soldered directly to the board of a smartphone, tablet or other (mobile) devices, extends SanDisk with the eMMC solution iNAND 7350. Based on 3D NAND, 32, 64, 128 or 256 GB of storage space. The largest model corresponds to the currently highest capacity in this range, also Samsung offers eMMC with a maximum of 256 GB. The 3D NAND technology, which is not specified in detail, is intended to offer advantages not only in capacity and performance, but also in the durability of more electrons per storage cell. The manufacturer’s previous eMMC solutions are still based on 2D-NAND.
SanDisk’s embedded chip measures 11.5 x 13.0 mm in the area and is 0.8 to 1.2 mm high depending on the capacity. Samsung’s 256 GB chip has the same area but is a bit thinner with 1.0 mm. Thanks to the “SmartSLC” cache, SanDisk promises sequential write speeds of up to 250 MB / s. When reading at random, 15,000 IOPSs are to be reached at the top, the press release even speaks of 22,000 IOPS on the models with 128 and 256 GB.
The iNAND 7350 is currently ” sampled by selected OEMs ” and is expected to be widely available in the second quarter of 2017.
IXpand to 256 GB
The external storage solutions of the SanDisk iXpand series are now also offered with up to 256 GB. The iOS memory sticks for iPhones and iPads have both a Lightning connector for Apple compatible mobile devices and a USB 3.0 connector for Mac or PC. Last spring, SanDisk reissued the series in the second generation and significantly slimmed down. Also the new acquisition with 256 GB measures only 5.9 centimeters in length, 1.7 centimeters in width and 1.3 centimeters in height. The weight is given by SanDisk with 5.4 grams.
The updated iXpand Drive App (on the App Store) should allow content to be sent directly from the drive to the TV with Amazon Fire or Google Chrome.
According to the manufacturer, the iXpand with 256 GB is now available for the price of 279.99 USD (MSRP without tax).
Memory update also possible with Connect Wireless Stick
The Connect Wireless series as memory sticks with data transmission via radio is now also available with up to 256 GB. In addition to the WLAN connection, USB 2.0 is integrated. By means of the application, a password protected radio transmission to iOS devices is possible. Also, streaming to a TV with Apple TV via AirPlay is supported. The recommended price for the SanDisk Connect Wireless Stick with 256 GB is also $ 279.99.
