The new 960-FPS camera of the Xperia XZ Premium and Xperia XZs is this year’s highlight of the Sony press conference on the MWC 2017. ComputerBase was able to try the Xperia XZ Premium after the presentation and to get more information on the smartphone. The 4K display does not use this mode again.
New sensor with DRAM is for the time exclusive for Sony
Sony installed its new high-end sensor in the Xperia XZ Premium and Xperia XZs. Sony also wants to retain this exclusive status for a certain time, the sensor should not immediately be offered to other smartphone manufacturers, this step is planned for the future .

DRAM in the sensor stores super-time magnifying glass
The new 960-FPS time-lapse is not a camera mode that can be used permanently for an unlimited time. It is an option beyond the normal time lapse, which can be temporarily switched on while shooting video. This limitation exists because the 960-FPS slow-motion is buffered directly in the sensor in the 125 megabyte DRAM buffer and then stored in the memory of the smartphone. If this sensor internal memory is full, the recording stops with 960 FPS and the smartphone continues with the parallel video recording, which is passed on at the DRAM. As soon as the buffer in the sensor has been emptied, the user can restart a new 960-FPS.
The result is a video that slows down at the respective activated points and reproduces the 960-FPS slow-motion at 30 FPS. The transition between normal video and inserted sequences is not recognizable by an intersection, but it is visible in terms of image quality. Because Sony’s Superzeitlupe is not simply connected only in the 4K- or Full-HD mode of the video camera, it is a stand-alone mode, which works on the devices in Barcelona only with 720p, although Sony’s semiconductor division the sensor with 960 FPS at 1.080 P.
Little light per frame
Since only a small amount of light is applied to the sensor at 960 FPS for each frame, Sony increases the ISO value, which leads to visible noise, which is not visible in normal video recordings. Sony recommends that you use the slow-moving loupe with very good illumination or in the sunshine under the open sky. The end result of a 960-FPS recording is impressive, despite minor limitations in the picture quality.
Android interface is not rendered in 4K
The second major innovation of the Xperia XZ Premium is the 4K display with HDR support. The Android interface itself is not rendered on the Xperia Z5 Premium in 4K, but by Full HD with the factor four scaled to the display. Only when the user in the video app a 4K video or in the gallery a photo is looking, is switched to the native representation without upscaling. Sony justifies this with a reduced energy consumption during the daily use. HDR is also only switched on, if it is synonymous with a video is used. This can either be the case with HDR content from Amazon as well as videos retrieved via YouTube or the synonymous with the Xperia shot 4K HDR movies.
The market launch of the Xperia XZ Premium is planned according to press release for June, but on the spot at the fair was also announced at the end of May. Nevertheless, it is still at least three months until the market launch of the smartphone, and in September, the next flagship could potentially be again at the IFA.

Snapdragon 835 might be responsible for late market launch
Since the new camera is also installed in the Xperia XZs planned for April, and while the display HDR is new, but a 4K panel on 5.5 inches for Sony per se is not new, the delay is actually only the Snapdragon 835. The fact that Qualcomm’s latest SoC is not synonymous in the LG G6 is another indication that Samsung has actually secured the first batch of the processor. For LG, the SoC would have been available too late, and Sony wants the new chip necessarily for the Xperia XZ Premium and must therefore wait until it is available in larger quantities. The Snapdragon 835 is already present in the exhibitors.ony Xperia XZ Premium runs with Android 7.1

Sony trumps with technically interesting solutions
The technical first impression of the Xperia XZ Premium is very good, despite the one or the other problem, which is attributable to the state of development of the prototypes shown in the press. With regard to the processing, the prototype status is not noticed by the devices, but the unfinished smartphones occasionally fall into the middle of the operation. A real eye-catcher is again the color chrome, but also black looks good. The noncommittal price is 749 euros measured by the features fair.
