DLC for the car: BMW Connected turns off features afterwards

The range of functions of BMW Connected is to be expanded and will in the future no longer only devide to digital services, but also enable hardware upgrades within the vehicle. The DLC for the automobile is just a matter of time.

BMW thinks at the latest since last year’s Autosalon Paris about using BMW Connected to unlock factory-installed hardware functions, which are still deactivated for the purchase of the vehicle. This idea was expressed by BMW, for example, in an interview with TechStage in the autumn of last year.

Sportive steering by firmware upgrade

At the MWC 2017 in Barcelona BMW concreted this project. Dieter May, senior vice president of digital services and business models at the BMW Group, said in a conversation with ComputerBase that the subsequent release of functions is currently being tested in the steering of the vehicle. On the basis of the same servo control, a sports mode can be purchased and uploaded via firmware update. The hardware should not be changed for such an update.

The subsequent unlocking of functions is useful for BMW, especially if the required component is only installed in one variant in the passenger car. Last year, there was also the consideration, such as the seat heating also without selecting the special equipment to plug and activate by software. In cold winter days the BMW owner would have been able to try them for a few hours free of charge and decide on the basis of the gained experience for or against the purchase.

Background to BMW Connected

BMW Connected is available since August last year in Germany, the required app was initially only available for iOS, meanwhile it is also available for Android. IOS, whose app is usually a generation new, has priority over the development. With the help of the BMW Open Mobility Cloud based on Microsoft’s Azure, BMW Connected can, for example, link the address book, the calendar or other services handled via the smartphone to the automobile, for example for intelligent routing based on calendar entries. With BMW Connected, the windows of the car can be opened and closed, doors locked, the horn triggered, or the charging status of the car battery.
